Allotment

The school allotment is in its second year and this year the new raised beds have made it a lot easier to get around and work around the vegetables. At the moment we are growing potatoes, leeks, onions and we are about to harvest the Strawberries and lettuce. The children have been busy weeding and watering. Children from Green Class have been teaching the younger children how to look after the plants.

Teaching Awards 2008

“The Teaching Awards provides a unique opportunity for us to celebrate those who, tirelessly and often selflessly, dedicate their lives to securing a future for the next generation"   Lord Puttnam of Queensgate

CBE The Awards were established by Lord Puttnam CBE in 1998 and are managed by the Teaching Awards Trust, an independent charity.

Our Year 6 teacher Mr Olly White was nominated by former pupils for The BT Award for Teacher of the Year in a Primary School

In addition, Kentisbeare School was nominated for the DCSF Award for Sustainable Schools

We are delighted to say that both Mr White and the School have been successful in reaching the Regional Awards for the South West Region, to be held in Torquay in June. This is when the winners will be announced. The Regional winners will then go on to the National Finals in London in October.

There have been 2 separate Assessment days at the school during April :

The assessors for the Sustainable School category saw the Glade, the allotment, met the School Council and talked to lots of other people.

Mr White's assessors in the Teacher of the Year category spent a lot of time with him, watched a literacy/art session involving "Barry's shed" (ask the year 6 for an explanation!), interviewed Anna Berkley(who nominated him), Jacob McKenzie and loads of current pupils from different year groups.

Staff, parents, a Rolle college tutor, a former Devon Schools Art Advisor and members of the community were all involved in interviews and discussions.

All of the assessors were impressed by many things that they saw, and took away things like the successful ‘Reflections' publication as a model for their own schools to follow.

We are now keeping our fingers crossed for 25th June!

Stephanie Hicks attended both Assessments, and her reviews of the days can be downloaded here:

Some of our year six children have been busy creating a special painting for the entrance to our school that celebrates our connection with St Mary's church.
